Since PV is such a global industry it is critical that PV products be measured and qualified the same way everywhere in the world. IEC TC82 has developed and published a number of module and component measurement and qualification standards.
They also published one standard related to specification for glass to be used in building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) applications (ISO/TS 18178:2018 and an extension with focus on module recycling for BIPV which is under development ISO/TS 21480).
These standards have limited impact on the PV industry, where the use of plastic is low and the content of REEs in PV modules is almost non-existent (although the dependence is higher in electronic equipment of BoS).
At least three regulatory levels for the production, installation, operation and end of life of photovoltaic systems can be considered. Additionally, the Life Cycle Assessment methodology is also regulated by standards. In this chapter, the three levels are presented.
