On October 14, Nigeria experienced its sixth nationwide blackout of the year following another collapse of the national power grid. Data from the Nigerian System Operator''s portal revealed that, by 7pm, power generation had dropped to zero megawatts, with all 22 power generation companies (GenCos) shut down. This marks the sixth grid collapse in 2024 and raises
Electricity in Nigeria is no longer seen as a basic utility; it is viewed as a rare privilege. Once regarded as an unusual disruption, power grid collapses have become a routine nightmare. Nigerians have moved from wondering whether the lights will come on, to fearing how long they will stay on before the next blackout. The consequences of these frequent power failures are

Nigeria''s national power grid is prone to frequent collapses, with the resulting power shortages proving an obstacle to economic growth and investment in Africa''s most populous nation.
Nigeria''s grid electricity is generated mostly from gas-fired thermal plants. The country''s 24 gas power plants, with a combined capacity of just over 11,000MW, deliver only about 30% of its capacity due to gas supply constraints. Ndidi Mbah, the TCN spokesperson, did not respond to requests for comment.

Nigeria has a large potential off-grid market, be it through renewables-based mini-grids or through solar home systems (SHS) (All On, 2016; NESG & RMI, 2018). Standalone solar PV systems are already cost-competitive on a lifetime basis over diesel and gasoline generators (NESG & HBS, 2017).
Today’s available on-grid peak generation averages 4 GW (NESISTATS, 2018) and the wheeling capacity of the grid is around 5.5 GW. Nigeria’s on-grid generation is dominated by natural gas power stations (85% of available capacity) and three large hydropower plants (14%) (FGN, 2016).
