Does Weiqiao still have a coal plant?
Weiqiao has retired some of its captive coal plants: 6,560MW which is nearly a third of them (1,980MW just last year). Many of the 2020 retirements were built only a few years ago, between 2010 and 2013. Yet, as of January 2021, it still operates 50 captive coal power units with a total capacity of 22.7GW, all dedicated to aluminium smelters.
Will Hongqiao move its aluminium smelters to China?
Hongqiao's relocation of aluminium smelters from its base in Shandong to China's southwest will by far be the world's biggest relocation of aluminium capacity, according to Knapp. "We are expecting 75% of our carbon footprint to be addressed through moving out of fossil-fueled electricity," added Knapp.
