Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) is the main generator and distributor of grid-based power to an estimated 90 percent of the population on the main islands of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, and Ovalau.
In line with this plan, assessments have shown that a combination of solar, wind, geothermal, marine, biomass, and biofuel could be used to meet Fiji’s energy needs. Currently, as much as 40 percent of Fiji’s power is generated from diesel and heavy fuel oil, which is purchased via local companies from Singapore-based suppliers.
Hydro power makes the largest contribution from renewable energy resources for electricity production in Fiji. Currently, there is 130 MW of installed capacity of hydro power out of which 0.18 MW is installed by FDoE for off-grid power while the rest is installed by FEA (grid-connected).
Fiji's energy situation is characterized primarily by a high reliance on imported fuels. To decrease this reliance, the Government is committed to incentivizing energy generation through renewable energy sources in the country.
The energy institutions in Fiji (Table 8), are responsible for energy planning, energy policy making, energy project financing, determination of energy prices (electricity tariff and fuel prices) and energy research. These institutions need to be well financed and adequately staffed to carry out its responsibilities effectively.
Fiji has a natural drive to find alternative energy sources in the form of renewable and indigenous fuels for both electricity production and transport services.
