Sodium is a much cheaper and more abundant material than lithium. Na-ion batteries are not capable of energy densities as high as lithium-ion (Li-ion) and are expected to last fewer cycles. However, they have the potential to be low-cost if produced at scale, coupled with an expectation of a lower risk of thermal runaway.
The company has a target to lower energy storage costs by up to 50%. Max Reid, research analyst in Wood Mackenzie''s Battery & Raw Materials Service segment, told Energy-Storage.news last year he estimated there would be around 1GWh of global annual sodium-ion battery production capacity in 2023 rising to 5-10GWh by 2025.
The Chinese battery maker broke ground on a 30 GWh sodium-ion battery factory earlier this year. However, the development and design of its first utility-scale battery energy storage system appear to be in advanced phases already.
